New community project kicks off with "Lake Trail Neighbourhood Day" on April 17

The City of Courtenay is partnering with the Lake Trail Parent Advisory Committee and Lake Trail School for their launch of the "Lake Trail Neighbourhood Connections Project." The project kicks off on Saturday, April 17 from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm with "Lake Trail Neighbourhood Day."

Hosted by Lake Trail School, this free event will give residents a chance to celebrate their neighbourhood, identify areas that they feel need improvement, get more information on local resources and provide feedback about possible alternatives. There will be an informal visioning process, a short survey, information sharing and gathering, pie and refreshments.

This project is designed to engage community members, the school district and agencies in strengthening links between the school and the surrounding neighbourhood.  There is ample evidence to show that the success of students depends on access to recreation and other social services. These help to build safer, healthier neighbourhoods.

Examples of potential outcomes of this project include after-school programs, community gardening, parks and trail development, fitness centre, childcare and adult education programs.

"Members of the Lake Trail Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) believe that the 'Community School' model, which is used effectively around the province, could benefit both students at Lake Trail School and the neighbourhood as a whole. The school is the heart of the Community, and many opportunities exist to share this amazing neighbourhood resource," says PAC member Sheila McDonnell.

The City of Courtenay is planning to work closely with the Lake Trail Neighbourhood Connection Project as they develop their programs.

"We’re excited about the opportunity to partner with the neighbourhood," says Randy Wiwchar, the city's director of community services. "We're really pleased at the level of enthusiasm showed by the team at Lake Trail, and we'll do what we can to help them make this project a success."

The Lake Trail Neighbourhood Connections Project is made possible thanks to an $8,000 grant from the School Community Connection Program. This program, funded by the Ministry of Education, is jointly managed by the Union of BC Municipalities and the BC School Trustees Association.
